Rovaniemi, the magic of the Arctic Circle

, the capital of Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi is located on the edge of the Arctic Circle. It is the gateway to the Far North, where boreal nature, Sámi culture, and winter magic meet.

Famous for being the official hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi captivates young and old with its snowy landscapes, northern lights and silent forests.

Here, winter extends from October to April, while summer, bathed in the midnight sun, invites you to discover another facet of the north: sparkling lakes, verdant nature and endless hikes.

Taste Lapland

Lappish cuisine reflects its nature: simple, pure and generous. Iconic dishes include stewed reindeer served with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam, wood-fired grilled salmon, and creamy salmon soup (lohikeitto).

For a sweet treat, Arctic berries—cranberries, blueberries, and blackberries—accompany local desserts and jams. And to warm up, nothing beats a strong coffee shared around a fire, or a visit to a traditional Finnish sauna.

Lappish culture and traditions

Rovaniemi is at the heart of the territory of the Sámi, the indigenous people of the north. Their way of life, based on reindeer herding, joik and leather or wood crafts, can be explored through museums and markets.

The city, destroyed during the Second World War, was rebuilt according to a plan designed by the architect Alvar Aalto, whose silhouette evokes… a reindeer's head seen from the sky! Rovaniemi thus combines heritage, modernity and nature.
